We are living on a revolving planet moving through space and nothing stays the same….
Let’s start with the breath?
Your breath….can you notice it now?
As you read this?
Can you feel your breath, the sensation inside your nostrils?
If you look outside, is the breeze blowing the leaves?
Have any blossoms appeared on the trees that weren’t there yesterday?
Change is everywhere.
I find it relieving and calming AND (paradoxically) massively scary when I realise that nothing is permanent….except maybe the awareness beneath my experience of changes in life, moment by moment.
As humans, our tendancy is to want to avoid the things that we don’t like, things we judge as bad – that’s aversion
….and we want to cling to the things that we do like, the things we judge as good – that’s attachment.
We are all human!
Yep we want to hang out on holiday (Bali, Noosa, a tropical island, insert your fav holiday spot)
Nope we don’t want to have to deal with the tax office (or insert you least fav admin stressor)
Just for some examples.
Soooo basically, we want to the Bali holiday to go forever (attachment), and we never want to have to sort out our taxes (aversion).
Yet, change happens.
The amazing Bali holiday will come to an end, and you will have to return home to lodge your tax return. Boooo!
Or maybe it happens differently. You originally couldn’t afford the holiday to Bali even though you really wanted to go, but you lodged your tax return which turned out to be easy, and (surprise!) you received a huge refund which covered your ticket to Bali and off you went. Yayyyy!
Impermanence is the understanding that everything in our experience is continually changing. Our thoughts, emotions, sensations, relationships and circumstances are not fixed. Even the most difficult experiences will change. Even the most wonderful experiences will change.
Something that can be a constant – the awareness beneath your experiences.
Moment by moment.
You might like to sit quietly and reflect on these questions:
- What is changing in my experience right now?
- Can I allow this experience to be here, without needing it to stay or go?
- Am I aware of my awareness beneath these changing sensations, thoughts and feelings?
